SPF in Makeup: Is It Enough?

Many people use SPF makeup for sun protection, hoping it will effectively shield their skin while enhancing its appearance.

However, relying solely on SPF makeup for sun defense is often not enough. One major concern is that SPF makeup typically only guards against UVB rays and fails to provide UVA protection.

UVA rays contribute to skin aging and can penetrate through car and home windows, even on cloudy days, potentially leading to significant skin damage over time.

Even broad-spectrum makeup products, which are supposed to protect against both UVA and UVB rays, do not offer sufficient protection unless applied much thicker than usual—about 15 times the normal amount. This amount is impractical and uncomfortable for everyday wear.

Considering these shortcomings, it’s important to find effective ways to protect your skin while using makeup.

Layer Your Sun Protection

The safest bet is to apply a dedicated sunscreen under your makeup. This method ensures that you have a sufficient amount of sunscreen to truly protect your skin from sun damage. Make it a base layer before you start your makeup routine.

Opt for Tinted Sunscreens

If you’re looking to streamline your routine, consider switching to a tinted sunscreen. Brands like Colorescience, EltaMD, and Alastin offer excellent tinted formulas that provide robust sun protection while offering a touch of color and coverage to enhance your skin’s natural beauty. These products feel great on the skin and can replace your foundation or base makeup, reducing the layers of products on your face.

Consistency Is Key

Finding a sun protection product that you love is crucial because it encourages regular use. Consistent application is the key to effectively guarding against sun damage and maintaining healthy skin over time.

By recognizing the limitations of SPF in makeup and modifying your skincare routine, you can achieve genuine skin protection. These changes are more than just preventive measures; they represent an investment in the long-term health and vitality of your skin.

Remember, when it comes to sun protection: don’t skimp, apply generously, and reapply often!
