We’ve all seen them – the “thinker” lines, or those pesky 11’s that form between the eyebrows. These lines can give off an impression of deep thought, concern, or even a stern expression, and they’re a common area of concern or even a stern expression, and they’re a common area of concern for many seeking a smoother, more relaxed appearance. But what exactly causes these lines, and how can they be treated effectively?
These lines are caused by a group of small muscles that work together to create that familiar frowning expression. Understanding these muscles is the first step in figuring out how to treat the lines:
Corrugator Supercilii
This muscle pulls your eyebrows together, creating vertical lines that look like the number 11 between your brows.
Procerus
This muscle pulls the skin on your forehead downward, contributing to the frown lines and sometimes causing horizontal lines across the top of your nose.
Depressor Supercilii
While there’s some debate about whether this is a separate muscle or part of another, treating it with a small amount of toxin can help lift the inner part of your eyebrows, creating a more open and refreshed look.
How We Approach Treatment
Once we understand the muscles responsible for those frown lines between your eyebrows, the next step is to treat them carefully. We often use Botox to relax these muscles and reduce the appearance of the lines.
We first focus on a small muscle called the corrugator, which is close to the bone. By using just the right amount of product, we can soften the 11 lines without affecting other areas of your face. To avoid any unwanted side effects, such as droopy eyelids, we inject the sides of the corrugator muscle more superficially, closer to the skin’s surface. This careful technique minimizes the risk of the product spreading too deep.
We also treat another muscle called the procerus. We place the injection lower on your forehead and deeper into the muscle to stop its downward pull, which helps reduce the frown lines. If needed, we add a tiny bit of product to the depressor supercilii muscle to lift the inner part of the eyebrows, giving your eyes a more open and lifted appearance.
